About

The Brasov County Museum of History is one of the most important cultural institutions of Brasov County.

It has the largest historical heritage of Brasov county (159,255 pieces), covering all historical epochs, from prehistory to the contemporary period. The museum organizes various cultural events (exhibitions, seminars, conferences, debates, festivals, etc.) in partnership with public or private institutions and organizations.

The mission of Brasov County Museum of History is to discover, identify, collect, protect, research and exploit the historical heritage of Braşov County, to bring the Braşov communities, prestige, pride and understanding, to learn and educate, and, last but not least , to get Braşov's habit of visiting his museums and the tourist's desire to return to Brasov.

The museums are not important points of interest for the Braşov community and the tourists arriving in the Brasov area, and the cultural events organized by them have the lowest publicity among the cultural preferences of the Brasov people.
The Management Plan of the History Museum in Brasov for the period 2014-2019, presented in September 2014, has left precisely this painful reality. The long-term vision and mission of the History Museum of Brasov were formulated under the influence of the crisis situation.
Thus, the new management plan pursued the reinvention of the Brasov County Museum of Historiy by transforming it into a representative cultural institution for presenting the historical identity of Brasov.

 The main activities are:

scientific establishment, administration, preservation and restoration of museum heritage;
scientific research, evidence, documentation, protection and development of the museum heritage;
permanently and / or temporarily capitalizing on museum heritage for the purpose of knowledge, education and recreation;
organization of field, systematic and rescue archeological research, and archaeological research to find new archaeological sites;
permanent contact with target audiences (in particular, Braşov community, Braşov county communities, students, Romanian and foreign tourists);
permanent contact with media, non-governmental organizations, cultural bodies, educational and research institutions, museums, international bodies and fora.
    The Brasov County Museum of History is a member of ICOM - International Council of Museums and since 2014 collaborates with the European Institute for Cultural Itineraries.

    Between 2014 and 2015, the Brasov County Museum of History is the leader of local museums based on the total annual number of visitors, including the category of young beneficiaries and pupils.

The activity of the Brasov History Museum takes place in several buildings, most of them being historic class A monuments:

The Council House, Braşov, Piata Sfatului nr. 30, where the permanent exhibition "Braşov - History, Culture, Civilization" (600 m.p. In the same building, on the first floor, there is the temporary exhibition hall with a surface area of 100 m.

The Black Church is the parish church of the evangelical congregation of Augustan Confession in Brașov. Its nickname derives from the damage sustained in the Great Fire in 1689, which destroyed large parts of the city and blackened the church`s walls. Initially used only popularly, the name became official on the 20th century. The Black Church houses many remarkable works of art: the baptismal font (1472), a wall painting depicting the Holy Virgin (ca. 1476), Ottoman rugs (17th-18th c.) donated by the members of the congregation to their church, pews (18th-19th c.) attesting to the vast activity of the guilds, the monumental neogothic altar and 5 pipe organs. Two documentary exhibitions, on display in the western part of the church, offer a short history of the Black Church and informations about the life of Johannes Honterus, a seminal figure in the Protestant Reformation in Transylvania.
